Today, 1 May, is Workers’ Day in South Africa.
This public holiday honours the contributions of workers and the history of the labor movement. It reminds us of the progress made in securing fair rights, better conditions, and recognition for workers across all sectors.
Yet for us Mompreneurs, this so-called “day off” often has a different appearance. While many may envision a leisurely day filled with relaxation, self-care, or perhaps a spontaneous outing, the reality for Mompreneurs is often far more complex and layered.

What does a day off mean to us?
For us, a "day off" frequently translates into a juggling act of responsibilities that extends beyond the mere absence of work-related tasks. It often means finding pockets of time where we can balance personal commitments with the needs of our family, all while attempting to carve out moments for ourselves. The day might begin with the usual morning routine—preparing breakfast, getting the kids ready for their activities, and ensuring that everyone is set for the day ahead.
As the day progresses, the concept of a break can morph into an opportunity to catch up on household chores that have been neglected during busier times. Laundry piles, dishes in the sink, and the never-ending battle against clutter can become our uninvited companions during these supposed days of rest. Even as we strive to take a step back from our entrepreneurial obligations, the responsibilities of motherhood and household management seem to demand our attention relentlessly.
Moreover, the emotional and mental load that accompanies being a Mompreneur does not simply vanish on a day off. We find ourselves contemplating business strategies, brainstorming new ideas, working on social media, or even worrying about upcoming deadlines and client needs, all while engaging in family activities. The mind rarely shuts off, as we navigate the delicate balance between nurturing our children and nurturing our business aspirations.
In addition, these days can also become opportunities for networking, albeit in a more casual setting. Playdates might turn into discussions about potential collaborations, or school events could provide a platform to connect with other like-minded mothers who share our entrepreneurial spirit. Thus, what appears to be a day off can easily transform into a blend of personal and professional interactions, reinforcing the idea that our roles as mothers and entrepreneurs are intricately intertwined.
Ultimately, for Mompreneurs, the notion of a “day off” is not about disengaging completely from our work or responsibilities. Instead, it becomes a unique blend of family time, personal care, and the ever-present entrepreneurial mindset, making it a day that is anything but ordinary.
So, what am I thinking about today?
Technically, there are no Zoom meetings, deadlines, corporate emails, or client check-ins. But my six-year-old didn’t get the memo—she was up and ready to start the day at 6:03 a.m. So much for that extra sleep I had planned.
Then come the internal debates:
“Should I finally tackle that laundry?”
"Clean the bathroom?"
"Get the shower clean?"
"Cook a great big lunch?"
“Maybe I can catch up on some admin?”
“Oh wait... did I even post on K&R’s social today?!”
Reality Check!
The truth is that a mom's work is never-ending. Whether she's running a business, managing the household, or seeking just five minutes of peace, she's always on the move.
Here's my straightforward plan for today:
Engage the family—chores become enjoyable with the perfect playlist.
Complete one or two tasks from the list (only if truly necessary, this needs discipline!).
Afterwards, disconnect and give myself permission to unwind.
Why is it important?
Because Workers’ Day should also be about acknowledging the work we do as mothers, partners, business owners, and everyday women who juggle multiple roles—and yes even on holidays.
To all my fellow Mompreneurs facing similar challenges:
Allow yourself to take a break, even if it's not ideal.
Recognise and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small.
And keep in mind—rest is also an essential part of the work.
A blog post wasn't on my agenda for today, but I felt compelled to share this because I'm certain I'm not the only Mompreneur experiencing these thoughts or feelings! Regardless, it's time to unwind and enjoy the break!
Happy Workers’ Day!
